Principal Flowers Earns FCPS Region 3 Outstanding Principal Distinction
We are thrilled to announce that Principal John Flowers has been named the FCPS Region 3 Outstanding Principal for the 2024-25 school year! This prestigious honor recognizes Mr. Flowers' exceptional leadership and dedication to student success. Mr. Flowers was first nominated by his staff as the Whitman Outstanding Principal and subsequently selected as the Region 3 representative.
Prior to joining Fairfax County Public Schools in 2023, Mr. Flowers served for over 22 years in the Houston Independent School District (Houston ISD). He brings a wealth of experience to Whitman, having served as a principal, assistant principal, literacy coach, and classroom teacher.
Throughout his career, Mr. Flowers has consistently demonstrated a commitment to improving student achievement, closing achievement gaps, and creating engaging learning environments. He has a proven track record of success in:
- Improving student outcomes: Addressing the performance of over-aged middle school students, remediating skills to close learning gaps, and setting students up for success in high school.
- Fostering a positive school culture: Engaging with all stakeholders to create a supportive and inclusive environment for students and staff.
- Building strong relationships: Prioritizing daily parent contact, engaging with the community, and creating safe and welcoming spaces for all students.
"Mr. Flowers has perfected the formula for earning respect from staff and students while simultaneously inspiring excellence and creativity: he is present, personable, and authentically interested in learning about others," shares Whitman School Psychologist, Katie Fava.
Mr. Flowers is known for his visible presence at Whitman. He greets students and staff daily, actively engages with students and teachers throughout the school day, and consistently supports students at after-school and weekend activities.
"Mr. Flowers focuses on closing achievement gaps and ensuring students have the tools and support they need to excel; we see this in his commitment to ongoing efforts to provide professional development for staff and create school-wide programs that promote understanding and inclusivity," highlights Whitman Assistant Principal, LaChelle Williams.
Whitman teachers also praise Mr. Flowers' leadership.
"Mr. Flowers came to our school at a time of significant transition, and made it clear that we are going to be taking a close look at practices and ensuring that everything we do is in the best interest of the academic achievement of our students as well as their social and emotional wellbeing," shares veteran teacher, Mike Warren.
First-year teacher, Charlotte Smith, adds, "whether he’s walking the hallways to ensure students are where they need to be, engaging them in thoughtful conversations, or helping them strive to reach their full potential, Mr. Flowers is a constant presence."
Mr. Flowers will now be considered for the distinction of FCPS Outstanding Principal for the 2024-25 school year. He will be recognized later this year at the FCPS Honors event.
Congratulations, Mr. Flowers, from the entire Whitman community! We are incredibly proud of your accomplishments and look forward to your continued success in guiding our Wildcats.
